What Is Counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy that can help people with various problems, from everyday relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, addictions, eating disorders, bereavement, and loss, in fact the list is extensive. It can be long-term, where we look at patterns of behaviour that may have their roots in the past, or short-term, dealing with day-to-day issues.
At times in our lives, we may need a professional therapist to help us navigate our way through the challenges that life can bring. Sometimes we are faced with having to make important decisions, and we cannot see the ‘wood for the trees’ and feel less than equipped to decide which path to take.
It is not about giving advice, or providing instant solutions, or ‘letting off steam’. It is a collaborative process where we build a trusting relationship that is confidential, non-judgemental, and accepting.

About Me

I am passionate about helping people. The most important aspect is the quality of our relationship. You are at the heart of the process. If we can build trust through our shared commitment of confidentiality, of honesty, and create an environment together that is safe and accepting, then any changes that you would like to make can be achievable.
We live in uncertain and challenging times, and it can be difficult for us to take care of ourselves. Things can seem overwhelming, and it can be comforting to carry on repeating patterns of behaviour that are unhelpful, but feel safe as we know the outcome, even though we feel that at times something is missing, that we are not happy, or we feel stuck, or unable to find calmness.

My Approach:

I work in a way known as integrative. This means I draw upon various theories and approaches that help me in understanding the needs of my clients. I believe that the quality of the relationship between counsellor and client is fundamental to a good therapeutic outcome.

I understand that taking the first step towards finding professional help and support can be daunting. Sometimes we need help and support beyond our friends and family, someone to really listen to us, a skilled professional who can explore with us the difficulties that life brings. I have helped many people with a variety of problems, and have seen the change that a good, trusting therapeutic relationship can bring.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a diploma in therapeutic counselling (integrative) from the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. (BACP) I follow the ethical guidelines of the association.

I have counselled a range of clients, many who have sought help with addiction problems. I also work within an addictions charity.

I have experience with helping people deal with the challenges that life can bring, including anxiety, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem and self-worth, and a range of other presenting problems.

I am committed to continuous professional development to deepen my knowledge and enhance my practice, and I am currently undertaking a further diploma in psychotherapeutic counselling.
